This is a genuine number from a genuine organisation, called Verian, who are conducting market research on behalf of HMRC. Due to the fact that I complete a self-assessment at the end of each tax year, I received a letter from HMRC around 2 months ago telling me that this organisation would be in touch with me. Yes, they’re off-shore and so, yes, the individuals asking the questions do sound ‘foreign’ but all of the questions asked were totally relevant to completion of tax returns and the new Making Tax Digital system that has been introduced. You can always them that you don’t want to participate when they call you, but I was happy to assist, particularly given the letter I received from HMRC.
