Called today asking to speak to the Finance Manager / Director, etc of the business. Advised it was in relation to a survey for HMRC and their tax services. They advised that HMRC have written to us regarding it. There were asking questions about the business which I couldn't understand why HMRC would need that info - all our tax / employee details are in perfect order (past HMRC audits have confirmed this also) and HMRC would have the answers themselves. I challenged this and advised I have not had any letter from HMRC r.e such a survey to which they said they could send me out an email regarding it instead, they'd just need my email (funny as HMRC already have that also). I said no to this and declined to answer any questions until I have received a letter from HMRC themselves advising of it so that I know it was a legitimate enquiry for HMRC. Without that, there was no way of know who this was and what, potentially confidential information, they may have been trying to acquire - perhaps with some nefarious intention, who knows. May well have been all above board, but I find it best to be certain of such things in this day and age.
